The desire is also to be able to stomp anyone smaller than you or to prevent anyone from stomping on you. Be warned though, Dan has done a great job of balancing this game. I encourage you to read the topics that teach about the misconception of rank and pvp ability. You've done a pretty good job of describing me. What I wanted out of the game was the ability to be competitive against anyone else playing the game, including cc warriors. The path I chose was dumping rank points into engineers and adding to decks when needed. The main purpose of this was to get more resource production which kind of feeds itself. More minerals equals more credits to colonize more planets. More research equals reaching higher building structures quicker to get more resources and to reach higher energy research quicker to rank quicker to colonize more planets to get more resources. More artifacts equals more prisoners to rank quicker and etc etc etc. When I first started playing, everyone recommended going heavy decks route. Here is a link to a post I put up 7 months ago advocationg going heavy engineers. viewtopic.php?t=2580. You'll notice that King Juggernaut replied to this post bringing up the option to slow play it. The fast ranking option allowed me to- 1. Be involved in a small community of players (let's say top 50) where most people know or know of each other. 2. Having a lot of engineers, I never have to wait for energy to build up to do something. Gives me the freedom to fight npcs whenever and for as long as I want. 3. I get to look at Dan's ship and see if any new modules are coming out and if not, I can threaten to disable him . 4. Having more planets allows me to get more excess artifacts which I can give to legion mates who might be short on certain ones. 5. Having more planets allows me to have a larger research total in which I can waste on the CT lab. 6. Since credits received from daily reward increases with rank, I was able to get 56 bil once (down side is that it barely covered the expense of invading a planet then putting buildings on it). 7. Build a ship which is competitive against anyone in the game. And this is the counter. By having more planets you allow yourself to gain every stat other then ranks (directly anyway) at a faster and faster rate (atleast until you run out of research options). All the math iv done has pointed to that in the end its better to be weak for a while for your rank then it is to stay at a lower rank. But hey different strokes for different folks. Got to advocate the high energy route though. Iv been using it for awhile now, very, very nice.

Which is dan's ship?
BTW: I slow ranked while my friend fast ranked. I got my weapons and armour researched, he poured it all into energy. He was disabled 16 times in 2 days, and quite the game. I'm now further then him, and am starting to speed rank...slowly, lol

+1 for an excellent thread.
I began as a slow to medium ranker, not as slow as you, but slow enough that I was pretty much on top among people my rank. Then I joined the Dysonians and fast ranked 150 levels. I found that this gave me new modules and many more resources per pull. I'm back to medium-speed ranking now, with the occasional pulse of 10 levels or so.
I applaud your thread and your efforts.

From what I have read on this thread, the Slow Ranker option seems to be mostly focused on "Don't do very much in the game" - because unless you are purely focusing on hacking or just not logging in very often, my in-game experience is that it is hard to avoid ranking at a reasonable rate even if you only do low xp/energy actions.

Well i slow rank kinda, since im doing a chain i rank faster than usual. Otherwise i would do NPC hunt or PVP. To me those are the slowest ways of doing this to me, also save Tri emblems and energy cubes, then when you want to rank all you do is use them all advance like 30-40 ranks depending on how many saved. I wonder how many some people have saved hehe.

1 catch to the slow ranker in the long run (in the short run, you are a bigger ship than everyone else, gratz) but if u made it to rank 200 in say a year, when someone else made it to rank 500... they have probably got triple your artifact production due to planet slots... meaning they can sit at rank 500 with a way larger income than you while you edge your way to rank 500 and by then the arts they have received means they are a stronger rank 500 than you will be when you reach that point, am i correct? So this leaves you with a constant balancing of a) trying to be strong compared to others and b) being a stronger person at higher ranks

Not all fast rankers do it to be the first this or best that. not all do it so they will not get stomped or to stomp ppl.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "much in the game." Keep in mind, I not only hacked my way to number 2, but I also build a strong legion that has survived the test of time. And, when some of those slow ranking players decided to speed up, they graduated from AU into the top 25 legions in the game; one in the top 3. I count among my "in game" achievements as training other strong players. Lastly, @ Soul, what other reasons would you share for fast ranking?

Being disabled hacked and raid has lil to do with fast or slow ranking.[ there is an argument you can use to try to counter this I would rather not get in to it it would just be point less in the end my point would still be true]

"Lastly, @ Soul, what other reasons would you share for fast ranking?" <--King For fun, To battle more and bigger npc's. Not to discover stuff or be the first. Just to open options and have choices unlock some things not to know about them not be the first or have them but to be able to have the fun of completing it. Gaining the satisfaction of doing this mission taking out this npc, disposable a well known TOP pvp player 6 time in a row and 8 times total and knowing that you prob got the most player kills on them. I don't care if some one try to or even smashes me i don't care to smash other for the sake of farming or just being able to with one exeption. By having a lot of nrg and a good recharge you can set more goals and accomplish them quicker. that's all it is to have the satisfactions of completing some thing the fast ranking was just there to open up options.

I slow-ranked for about 5 months last year, and ultimately I just got bored with it. That, and having your gameplay being totally dependent on cooldown timers just got old. If you have the time and patience to sit around all day and click every 15 minutes or whatever, then by all means.
Also, depending on what level range you do decide to slow level, you might screw yourself out of production via the planet caps. Hindsight tells me it's also extraordinarily important to be picky about the quality of your planets. If you picked up some crappy planets as a newb, it'll be to your benefit to spend some GPs and drop them to make room for better ones.
I am thinking that there's a sweetspot for slow-leveling, too. I'm guessing ~levels 125-175 is a good range.

yeah... it all boiled down to personal enjoyment. Some enjoy slow ranking, some enjoy fast ranking. We cannot really compare them because they both have their advantages and dis-advantages. Fast ranker enjoys being on the top, killing any ships that come across. Slow ranker enjoys building their ship precisely at the best on their current ranking, and find it's fun killing slightly bigger ships that come across. I think one thing cool about this game is..., there are moments that you need to rank fast and also moments that needed to slow down to catch things up.

At b you are rank 200 your friend is rank 500, you are strong for you rank he is not. At c, you are rank 500 he is rank 900, you are strong for your rank, he is not - ergo, you are strong always for your rank my point: 3 time frames again: a, b, c. a and b are the same now let us say between b and c, your friend does not rank at all, instead he soaks up his income and doesn't spend energy, so that at c, you are both rank 500. my argument is that the one that your friend is better off because he has all in all gained more resources because of having way more planet slots for longer. my conclusion being this: obviously (compared to others your rank) as you speed rank, you are vulnerable and weak. if you slow rank you become strong. BUT if you speed rank to a certain point in the game then stop, you are better off than the slow ranker... assuming you stop ranking. of course this leads the problem of a player not knowing what rank areas to stop ranking for a bit before powering another 200 ranks again...

I'm a slow ranker myself, and this is what I have...
Rank 307 Star Destroyer
Technologies that can be researched (purple text in tech tree):
Weapons: Thetacron Radiation Energy: Proxy Universe Reactors Shields: Obviator Shields (maxed tech tree) Cloak: Dimensional Masking Hull: Syncopated Phase Matter Defense: Exergonic Inversion Scan: Hyerflux Signaling (currently researching) Buildings: Star Lifting Bases: Sub Quantum Logistics
If I credit-carded or whatever and went to rank 600+ on energy refills, I would be shooting myself in the foot. By the time I hit rank 600 "naturally", I will most likely have maxed out the whole tech tree for every tech. Compare that to a lot of 500+ players who have yet to finish their tech trees.

i would describe it as taking your ship, chopping it in half, and putting an artifact generator in the middle, and then taking ages to make it fly again you would be shot in the foot to start with (and i am ruling out leveling with real money, so ur "power leveling" will be a little slower ) but after a while of sitting at rank 600, cashing in the income, that research will catch up and max out, and in the mean time, your art production is much larger than it is now. so if you waited for the time it would have taken you to reach 600 "naturally", you will have received way more art points (i am focussing on arts because mining MAY be negated by potential upkeep and you are saying that by 600 you should complete the research tree anyway....)

You're forgetting one other thing. Badges. Its far easier to get badges at lower levels than at the higher ones. If I level slow, I can get all the badges I need for 4 Dominion guns, 4 Decryption Quads, and a few Heist Dispatch centers faster at ranks 200 - 400 than at 600+. Ditto for getting your combat rep up to Insane and keeping it there. So not only does slow leveling benefit you with high tech for your level, but also badges and PvP. Besides, with the high tech for your level, you can PvP even easier in your level range and consquently badge even easier. Its all about synergy.
