When ice thaws, the liquid actually takes up a smaller volume than the solid, not the other way around. Why then does the mass surface melter make a planet BIGGER when it should in fact be smaller?

Because a terraformer to make a planet smaller would suck.

Because the water takes up less volume, revealing more of the land that was previously beneath the ice.

It'd make more sense as a mass surface FREEZER, which turned a oceanic into an icy.

(*sarcastically, in case you can't tell*) it makes sense just like a phasic chain ionizer allows you to place population on a gas planet after ionizing the entire atmosphere

i'm still lost on the logic behind that one

since when did heating something make it smaller.

Solid molecules are closely together
Liquid molecules are far apart
Gas Molecules become way far apart

Heating expands objects. While cooling them down will contract/compress molecules.

But with water, when it's frozen, the molecules line up in such a way that they take up MORE space than when it was a liquid.

Don't believe me? completely fill to the brim a bottle with water, screw the lid on, and put it in the freezer. The bottle will burst because the ice takes up more space than the water.

only problem with that example... most people are going to try it with a plastic bottle, which most will give a little as the water expands...

but aye, ice is less dense than water, which is why it floats at the top of your drinks...
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water) Someone on wikipedia wrote:
The maximum density of water occurs at 3.98 °C (39.16 °F). It has the anomalous property of becoming less dense, not more, when it is cooled down to its solid form, ice. It expands to occupy 9% greater volume in this solid state, which accounts for the fact of ice floating on liquid water.

i know what you are saying. its like putting a can of coke in the freezer and the can will break when the soda freezes.

I believe this is not because the liquid is the one expanding rather the container is contracting to the point of cracking.

Dan's logic here is correct. solid when heated expands.

Spyder is right. Ice is bigger than water... somehow.

You know ice takes up more space than water because even though they're the same thing, ice has a lower density than water. With almost all other substances, the solid form is more dense.

Okay, then how 'bout this solution, nobody said the ice was water. Methane can become ice, as can many other liquids, so the oceanic aren't necessarily filled with water.

come of the octafari chains artifacts have "hydro" in the name; hydroshifter for example.....just found out that hydro isn't water, it means water-LIKE, so I can just imagine the oceanics being filled with liquid methane lol
in witch case YES, they would expand when melted, would it expand TWO sizes? I doubt it but whatever...haha
