Well, I did say every few times your ship class changes so you've basically just repeated me.

theres been a couple of these floating around, and i'll reiterate what i said there:
While yes additional ships would be cool at the start of the game it would give the game more dynamic if you could change ships later - aquireing new ship designs.
you could get new ship designs by disabling so many NPC ships example if you wanted your ship to look like say a T.0. Troop Carrier you would have to disable at least 10 - 20 of them to get the ship design. This would give people alot of ships to choose from in terms of what there ship looks like.

Also, a top translucent layer that would change color depending on the dominant type of armor you have. And perhaps the same thing with the shields. Why stop there have the lights emitted from the ship windows change to different colors based on the power core levels too. and as far as the shield colors, that would be easy to do if Dan based the shield coloration on the main shield module tech level you have installed, with top tech (Obviation Barriers Mk III) giving you the players choice of color, and on bases, the legion leaders choice of base shield color. my 2c

That ties in with unlocking new races and upgrading hull, shields, and energy cores
