You do send notices when you rank up or kill an NPC, right?
CaptainQuark,
I am somewhat offended by this line if you are trying to imply something that I think you are trying to imply. Anyways, it is directed toward off-topic so I will pretend as if I never saw it

It will also save both of us our time and energy.

Also we should be marketing the game actively to those we think will be interested.
Entirely agreed.

Does that not send the notice out to others who don't play currently? I think it does.
In short, I agree. Yes, it works like a way to pull new population in to GL.
However the degree of its effectiveness is questionable compared to "begging."
When we encourage other people to send those notice, we are encouraging "bragging."
First is motivation. When begging happens, there's usually a pretty good motivation given to users, so they are much more likely to send other people requests. (and this part is what bothers some of you.) So a developer can expect higher rate of new posts in begging. If everyone does something good toward the community for no reward, the world will be a paradise. However it is only an ideal. More realistic approach when directing a population is to give them some incentive do something that is proportional to their trouble and effort.
Second is the exposure. The exposure is almost as important. When I brag about my new achievement, not many people are going to see it because it is not very visible, unless these non-players click "home" and click "most recent" tab, which is not a lot. For a non-gamer, there is very little reason to click recent tabs to see all these game posts, while s/he can see significant posts with 'likes' and comments that are not game related, on the Top News. For a gamer, there are countless number of random game app posts coming up and won't get much attention, especially if the post is someone bragging on something (which brings to my third point). On the other hand, when you beg, they get a notification on top of any screen of FB, and they have to see it, and click it (which brings to my last point.. refer accordingly).
Third is the content. When a random person sees someone saying "New Rank! Sinsa just reached rank 32 in Galaxy Legion" or "Renegar, the lazuli station disabled!" they would probably think nothing, or think "good for you" and move on in most cases. However when somebody asks you to "Sinsa wants you to help him unlocking a reward!" or "Sinsa needs your help receiving a valuable treasure!", then there is more punch into it, at least more than the alternative.
Last is the action step. When somebody is bragging, there is no need for you to do anything other than just ignoring it, if that person was weird enough to find that post. On the other hand, if they receive a request, they have to actually do something about it to make it go away (which seem to be another reason why some of you not like it). Now they might block the game if they are not interested in playing, but if these are not interested to begin with, there is no reason why they would click a post called "New Rank! Sinsa just reached rank 32 in Galaxy Legion!"
In any case, to prevent confusion, I am not saying we should make the energy canisters something we should beg to receive. I can see why sending requests like "Help me get an energy canister that refills energy!" can be a hassle and ineffective. What I am saying is that there is no begging involved in playing GL in general, whether they are canisters or something else. There is probably something more appropriate that is worth begging and bothering other non-players for it, and help the game grow in the process.
On the final note, it seems people are more focused in expressing what they want (which is not necessarily a bad thing, since it is the suggestions board) too much compared to convincing Dan why he should accept this suggestion and give free energy to everyone. Actually, I like this suggestion and maybe with some polishing, it might grab Dan's interest as well as my support.
(although I doubt my support weighs much, lol
