 How to improve raiding ability?

Every time I disable an enemy ship I try to raid it, but my raids almost always fail. I'm pretty good at hacking, and on my way to a black hat medal, even without the badge buffs. But I want to get better at raiding. What sort of modules or artifacts can improve my odds of a successful raid?

Current stats
Rank 466
Kronyn Builder
2340 Energy
10513 Hull
4945 Shields
Decks 3760
Attack 3491 (currently researching Heavy Thetacron Cannon)
Defense 5974
Scan 4505
Cloak 2828

Raiding is based off how large a crew your ship has.

How many engineers/tac officers/helmsman and scientists do you have?

There are yellow badge modules which will give you a 7% increase to raid chances, but without a really good crew number your odds are still going to be rather sucky.

I believe Protean Armories increase your raiding ability...although how exactly raiding ability is calculated is vague and unknown to me. +7% per armory it says. So if I had 100 crew total, it would be as if I were adding 7 more crew? Of course, becoming a raider in profession helps too.

I think someone has mentioned a few times that it only increases how much you raid and not your chances of success. I'm not sure though.

That's a Catch-22. I can't accumulate enough yellow badges to get p Protean Armory. I have 65 yellow badges, and need 80 to build one. The only way to get yellow badges is to successfully raid an opponent, and I haven't had a successful raid in weeks.

For my crew size, I currently have:
230 engineers
176 tactical officers
608 helmsmen
1609 scientists

Stop adding decks. Rank points into tacs. Raise arti production.
Look for people with large amount of decks. Try raiding them. Try multiple times.

Looking at how base raiding is affected by them (where we can see the %s in the clear), I'm pretty sure they increase your chance of success. I think they don't change the amount you get on raids, but I'm not sure about that.

I would definitely say that Protean Armory's increase your Raid ability. I was failing with 3 or 4 of every 10 attempts until I put on the first Protean Armory then, without changing my anything else, it jumped to about 1 to 2 in every 20 failed. I do have a fair amount of crew for my rank but the Armory definitely made a big difference.

Get more and more crew. increasing your artifact production will produce more rescued prisoners, helsmen, and scientists, all of which can be used to increase your crew size. getting the protean armories would also help and if you want something a little extra to help go raider as a profession. also keep in mind that a person has to be disabled to raid so i'd also recommend increasing your attack some more so you can more easily slice through their hull and shields.

It's not a catch 22 because crew # is the factor that keeps it from happening that way. With more arty production you get more Prisoners and Android Scientist. I'm not sure if different crew adds better chances to raid success but Scientist obviously are the easiest to accumulate, so use up all your Android Scientist when you get them.

i had started a topic on crew / rank to try to see if it had any relationship to raiding effectiveness:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=25773

Well I don't know where I got that from then, maybe it's just the raiding profession, maybe it's neither.
