actually slow ranking with purpose though, have a couple of rank 500 goals I am trying to accomplish, and beyond that game wide goals as well, but I'll update all of that information on my ship log when the big 5 oh oh comes.

I have a suggestion for a change to the way the second formula is calculated, which at the moment seems to be resulting in ship strength ratios with too much variation. Obviously the second formula is trying to factor in the difficulty of disabling a low deck build or SSB, which is the most significant strength of some ships but also a factor for all ships no matter what rank. I think a few people have mentioned some of the draw backs there are in building a ship based solely on a low damage cap and by dividing the total of your ATT+DEF+HULL+SHIELDS by the damage cap and then again by rank the second formula places far too much weight into the benefits of a SSB. Basically it is too large a number to divide a ship's stats by for anyone that dared to have more than a few hundred decks on their ship. So anyway, after what has turned out to be a bit of a long winded explanation I think I have a really simple solution; instead of dividing by your damage cap and then again by your rank, ADD them together before dividing and don't worry about having to multiply by 100 at the end. So it would be:


(ATT+DEF+HULL+SHIELDS) / (CAP+RANK) = SS:R <- - - - - Add CAP+RANK together before dividing & DO NOT multiply by 100.

I haven't worked out my own yet cause I didn't want to just find something which worked well with my particular stats but not for other types of builds or different ranks. However, I did test it out for a few of the ships that are known to be some of the strongest in the game and a few that are at the top for their rank, as well as a couple of genuine SSBs, a decent MSB, a slow ranker, and one high rank low deck build and this change does seem to stop the huge variation between ranks and the massive variation there was between some ships' SS:R using the first formula and what is was using the second formula. But if this change is giving you some unusual results please post them up so someone can figure out why it isn't working as a reasonable per rank comparison of ship strength.

i can give cautious approval to the proposed defense strength formula.

the charts on the left use the current formula, dividing by cap and then by rank; the charts on the right use the proposed new defense strength formula. the charts on the top use a logarithmic scale for the defense strength, while those on the bottom use a linear scale. data is from the pilots used in the ship log showdown.

analysis:

1. SSB strength at low ranks is severely diminished
2. SSB/MSB strength at mid/high ranks is greatly increased
3. overall upward trend with rank on both log and linear charts
4. ship build size is less distinguishable
5. ic*'s shipbuild moves higher in defensive strength than elerian's larger deck build

Great idea, I think not4use's revised calculation is a definite improvement, and senatorhung's graphs seem to reflect that it is more useful using the revised calculation.
The improvement is perfectly illustrated for me by the greater spread across all ranks and ship builds and the dramatic change to Golgotha's positioning - the fact he was scoring so low on the old calculation in comparison to low rank SSBs always seemed a bit strange to me.

You guys and your formulas. Just use the ones Dan uses and it will be a lot simpler.

cap = deck/2 or (rank+19)/2
Min shot = (hull+shield)/cap
Damage per shot = cap*tanh(attack*[0.6 to 1/0.6]/(5*defense))


average shot at a given attack= (hull+shield)/cap*tanh(attack*[0.6 to 1/0.6]/(5*defense))
Pick a suitable attack, maybe what is considered "average" for their rank and then solve. More shots required the stronger the ship.

another option would be to get away from combining attack and defense into a single ship strength stat.

instead:

POWER = attack / rank

TOUGHNESS = (defense + hull + shield) / (damage cap + rank)

here are charts, with power/toughness on the left, and not4use's suggestion on the right:

EDIT1: thus, instead of talking about how 'strong' a ship is, a more powerful ship would be one which has high attack power, while a tough ship is one that will require a lot of effort and energy to disable.

EDIT2: it would be neat if folks who get the exotica medal in the future could post their power used to acquire Exotica, and their toughness used to keep it for 8 hours ... call it the Golgotha comparison test ;)

I like that split. It seems to be very much in line with how your ship's stats are divided in the game.

The best part is that wolfy will love that this means MOAARRR formulas. He's always going on about how we need more formulas...oh, wait...maybe that was someone...MOAR, Wolfy MOARRRR!!!

Agree with not4use, I like the power vs toughness formulas slightly more since they separate attack and defense

At rank 350...

power = 28.5 (Konqul race bonus)
toughness = 63.6 (Konqul/fixer race/profession bonus)
